Background
Background National Academy Associates, Inc . is a non-profit international organization representing senior law enforcement professionals, who have graduated from the FBI National Academy. They are dedicated to providing our communities and profession with the highest degree of law enforcement expertise through continuous training and education. From its inception in 1935, the FBI National Academy has long been a vital element in the continuing improvement of law enforcement standards, knowledge and cooperation throughout the world. The National Academy and the FBI’s “Field Police Training Program” provide a wide range of leadership and specialized training, as well as an opportunity for professional law enforcement officials to share ideas, techniques and experiences. The FBI National Academy will soon be celebrating its 75 th year. Over the years the institution developed into quarterly classes consisting of 10 weeks of training for upper and mid level law enforcement. The curriculum focuses on leadership and management training and consists of courses relating to leadership and management science, law communication, forensic science and health/fitness. Over 42,000 students, representing 169 countries, have graduated from the FBI National Academy, of which 7% of the students are international, U.S. territories and possessions. Following graduation, each individual has the opportunity to join the FBI National Academy Associates, a dynamic organization of more than 16,000 law enforcement professionals who have played a significant role in developing a higher level of competency, cooperation and integrity within the law enforcement community. The FBINA training creates a strong and cooperative bond among law enforcement officials throughout the world; the training also reinforces communication and commitment. Meeting, exchanging ideas, forming friendships and solving problems - that is what the FBINAA is all about. The FBINAA takes the vision presented at the Academy and forges that vision into the realities of tomorrow’s law enforcement role. Training sessions and other networking events are conducted each year in local and international chapters. This benefits not only from the timely, in depth, educational sessions conducted by NA instructors and other leaders in the law enforcement community, but equally from the exchange of cooperative ideas with fellow graduates. One out of five NA graduates is the head of a department; many more hold top command positions which create an invaluable resource outside the classroom. At the national level, an Annual Training Conference and Law Enforcement Expo are held on a rotating basis among four sections. The training at these conferences is unmatched. The FBINAA encourages family participation and plans are made to include them at each event. The Association website www.fbinaa.org features sections such as members only, annual conference information/registration, upcoming programs and events, an online store, as well as chapter and session links. The members only section is extremely popular, capable of editing officers’ own membership profile, join and communicate with other members via list servers and forums. Lastly, and extremely useful is the ability to reach out to other members by searching the online member database by session, chapter, city, state and agency. As you can see, the network is a strong, viable resource that can be used long after one leaves the Academy.
