Alaska

News

In March 2022, it came to the attention of Shirley Coté (Session 164) that one of our elder members, Anchorage Police Department Retired Captain Mick Taylor (Session 88), had not been seen on Facebook for a while. Upon checking with Mick’s son, Shirley learned that Mick’s computer had broken down. She went to the Anchorage Police Department retirees Facebook page to see if anyone would be willing to contribute toward a new computer. The response was immediate and outstanding. Over $1,800 was pledged by twenty-seven retirees. Whereas the intention was to buy a four- or five-hundred-dollar computer the response was so great that the group decided a nice iPad would be fitting. Shirley bought that with $450 to spare which was sent to Mick.

Mick, who now lives in long-term care, was so appreciative. If he thanked us once he thanked us a thousand times. Retired APD Lt. Bill Richardson set Mick up and Captain Gerard Asselin (Session 276) went along for a visit and a presentation of our current chapter coin. Mick said he felt so honored.

Retirement

Lieutenant Brian Wassmann (NA 265) retired on May 31st, 2022, after over 28 years with the Alaska State Troopers. His career began as a Recruit in 1993 at the Public Safety Academy, then as a Trooper in Fairbanks, Bethel, and Neanana. In 2003 he was promoted to Sergeant in Fairbanks then to Lieutenant in 2015. In 2021, Brian transferred to Anchorage as a deputy Commander of the Alaska Bureau of Investigations. During his career, Brian was a member of the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT), Crisis Negotiator, Field Training Officer, and Certified Instructor in various topics during his career with DPS. His experiences and knowledge in the protection of Alaskans have been a strong asset to the Department. Best of wishes to Brian and his family as they start a new chapter in Arizona in the fall!

California

News

California Chapter Historian Gina Haynes Di Napoli, Session 225, flew to Philadelphia in May to meet up with fellow NA classmate, Lisa Shahade, Session 225. Together they hiked up Mount Misery to complete the 6.1-mile, 2022 Virtual Yellow Brick Road in support of The Charitable Foundation. A grueling hike but for a worthy cause.

Promotions

Congratulations to Lance Brede, Session 256, who was recently promoted to Deputy Chief of Fremont PD. Lance was previously a captain with the East Bay Regional Park District Police.

Congratulations to Jim Cooper, Session 211, who will replace outgoing Sheriff Scott Jones, as the new Sacramento County Sheriff. Cooper has 30 years of law enforcement experience and served with the sheriff's office in various roles, including the gang unit. He spent 15 years as a city council member and the mayor of Elk Grove. Cooper was also elected to the California State Assembly in 2014, where he authored more than thirty public safety bills over the last eight years. Now as sheriff-elect, he hopes to build up the department as the force is down about 10%.

Congratulations to another NA graduate, Commander Yesenia Sanchez, Session 272, who in the recent elections has managed to unseat her boss, incumbent Alameda County Sheriff Gregory Ahern, Session 215, and avoid a November runoff. Sanchez's 24-year career with the department started in 1997 as a sheriff's technician at the North County Jail, now the Glenn E. Dyer Detention Facility, in Oakland. She became a deputy in 2001 and worked her way up the ranks to her current position as division commander overseeing the Santa Rita Jail Facility in Dublin.

Passings

Our condolences go out to the family, friends and loved ones of retired Filmore PD Police Chief, William “Bill” Brewer, Session 100 (graduated March 20th, 1975). William passed away on April 5th, 2022. We thank you for your service.

Eileen Behr, Session 209, congratulations on your retirement from Drexel University! Your 45 years in law enforcement is remarkable and commendable, knowing that you have definitely made a tremendous mark on the safety and security in the region. Our Chapter wishes you the best of luck in your new career in the private sector and wish you much health and success.

Congratulations to Thomas J. Nestel III, Session 198, on your retirement from Septa Police Department after 40 years of service with Philadelphia Police, Upper Moreland Township Police Department, and most recently, the Septa Police Department. Our chapter wishes you continued health and success in your future endeavors.

Passings

The Eastern PA Chapter sadly announces the passing of Richard C. Bullick, Session 182, of the Philadelphia Police Department on June 19, 2022. Rick was born and raised in the Olney section of Philadelphia. He was a graduate of Olney High School in 1966. After graduation, he served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Upon his discharge, Rick joined the Philadelphia Police Department and soon met Anne, who would be his wife of 48 years. After 42 years serving the city of Philadelphia, Rick retired at the rank of Chief Inspector. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bullick family, thank you for your service, Rick.

Florida

Florida Chapter appoints Chaplain

In conjunction with the National Spiritual Leadership Network program, the Florida Chapter has appointed Al Lamberti as the Chapter Chaplain.  Al has a long history with the Florida Chapter as he is a past president, conference host agency leader and served on many committees. He is a mentor to all the new board members and especially our presidents.

Congratulations Al on being our Chaplain and we look forward to your wisdom and spiritual guidance.

Illinois

Retirement

Chief Christopher Mannino of the Park Forest, Illinois Police Department has retired after 25 years of service, having served in a wide range of roles and assignments throughout his career. A graduate of Session 237, Christopher Mannino credits his attending the FBI National Academy with inspiring his and his agency's focus on building relationships with the community through public communications. Earning a master’s degree in political and justice studies with a focus on public communication, Christopher served as the face and voice of his agency through various crises and breaking news events, including officer-involved shootings, serious crimes, a pandemic, protests and civil unrest, and a tornado. In 2016, he began sharing his media and social media experiences with law enforcement agencies and organizations across the country as an instructor and public speaker.

Following retirement from a law enforcement leadership role, Christopher has joined Julie Parker Communications as a senior director. Julie Parker is a guest lecturer at the FBI National Academy and her firm helps organizations improve their communications, both internally and externally. Chief Mannino was recently interviewed by Julie Parker about the role the FBINA played in his career and his transition to the private sector on the FBINAA's Leadership APB podcast https://www.buzzsprout.com/1083449/10842490-guest-host-julie-parker-interviews-retired-chief-christopher-mannino .

While previously active in the Northern Illinois Division of the FBINAA, Christopher and his wife and family have relocated to Florida, where he looks forward to becoming active in that chapter.

Kansas/Western Missouri

News

Curtis Nicholson, Session 244, has been named as the Chief of Police for the Kansas City, KS Public Schools effective June 16, 2022. We wish him all the best in his new position!

Retirements

Major Tad Peters, Session 276, will retire on July 8, 2022, after 25 years with the Springfield, MO Police Department serving his community. Prior to Springfield PD, Tad spent two years as a dispatcher for the University of Central Missouri Campus Police followed by two years with the Warrensburg, MO Police Department. He began with the Springfield Police Department in 1997 and worked his way through the ranks to Major.

Tad plans on enjoying retirement for the summer and seeking another job in law enforcement or related field. He is active with our Chapter, and we hope he continues to attend our retrainers and events. We wish you the very best in retirement, Tad!

New England

News

The National Conference Committee 2010 - Boston held a reunion dinner on May 2, 2022. Great catching up with the crew.

Helena Rafferty, Session 211, has been appointed Police Chief for the Town of Canton, MA. She replaces retiring Chief Ken Berkowitz, Session 217, who retires after 17 years as Canton’s Chief.

FALL RE-TRAINER
We are still working on the last few details and sponsors for the conference. Look for the registration and training schedule to be out later this month. Dates are September 13th – 16th at Eagle Crest resort in Redmond. 5k on the 13th; Golf, Firearms, half day session and BBQ on 14th; full day and banquet on the 15th; finally, short day and business meeting/election on the 16th! Gonna be a thrilla!

News

Promotions

We are excited to confirm Adam Turk’s appointment to Chief of Police for the City of Greeley, Colorado. Greeley is Colorado’s 10th largest city. He is a graduate of Session 266.

Turk stepped in as interim police chief last September following the retirement of his predecessor, Mark Jones. Since then, Turk led the Greeley Police Department while the city conducted a nationwide search. As one of four finalists for the permanent position, Turk’s experience, familiarity with Greeley, interim leadership, and the public’s input during the open forum all factored into the selection, said the city manager.

Turk started his law enforcement career in 1999 as an officer with the Greeley Police Department. In over 22 years with the department, he has worked as a patrol officer, detective, sergeant supervising detectives, and lieutenant overseeing patrol operations. Promoted to deputy chief in 2018, his leadership duties included planning and development of organizational policies.

He holds a master’s degree in Criminal Justice and a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Northern Colorado.

NEW CHIEF OF KNOXVILLE POLICE DEPT - PAUL NOEL

During his 25-plus years with the New Orleans Police Department, Paul Noel has served as Deputy Superintendent, Chief of Detectives, Chief of Field Operations, as the Leader of the Sexual Assault Special Task Force, a Commander for the Criminal Investigation Division, and more. He is a graduate of the FBI NA Session 230.

Noel attended Loyola University New Orleans, where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. He is an avid outdoorsman, and he and his wife are proud parents of 2 children.

His first day on the job will be June 13, 2022.

RETIREMENT OF CHIEF OF KNOXVILLE POLICE DEPT - EVE THOMAS

Eve M. Thomas was sworn in as the 26th Chief of Police of Knoxville, Tennessee on June 21, 2018. The Knoxville Police Department (KPD) is an accredited 530-person department responsible for the protection and safety of the citizens and visitors to the city.

Chief Eve Thomas began her police career in January 1993 with the Knoxville Police Department following a career in the retail industry. After joining the department, Thomas served as a patrol officer, field training officer and in other roles before being promoted to Sergeant in 1998. In 2005, she was promoted to Lieutenant, and then to Captain in 2011. In 2013, she was assigned to the Patrol Division as the East District Commander, and in 2015 she assumed an assignment as the Department’s Internal Affairs Unit Commander. She also served in the Criminal Investigations Division before being promoted in February 2018 to Deputy Chief and then to Chief of Police following the retirement of Chief David Rausch. Chief Thomas was a graduate of FBI NA Session 235.

Passings

Mr. William Hughes passed away May 15 at Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital after suffering multiple strokes.

He was born in Memphis and attended Booker T. Washington High School. He was president for the class of 1950. He was a graduate of the Session 114 of the FBI National Academy. He attended Shelby State Community College and Memphis State University. His focus was on law enforcement investigations.

Mr. Hughes was appointed sheriff’s deputy in 1960. Throughout the years, he would be promoted to sergeant, lieutenant, captain, and jail inspector.

The Memphis and Shelby County Bar Association honored Mr. Hughes in 1977 with the Most Outstanding Deputy Sheriff recognition.

The Virginia Chapter held a very successful mid-year emerging technology meeting at the State Police Academy in Richmond. With nearly 50 attendees, we discussed various technologies such as Rapid DNA, genealogy and automated (AI) vehicle video technology.

Western Pennsylvania

News

The Western PA Chapter held another successful retrainer at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort May 11, 12, and 13. Our special guest was Frank Abagnale and he did not disappoint.

Special thanks to Renee for bringing the satellite version of the NA store to our attendees and guests. It was very well received.

The Evelsizer Family 5K is back for another year and is being held on October 30. Just as last year, we will be hosting live music, food trucks, and a local micro-brewery will be on hand for fun after the race. Retirements

Bert Lott, Session 231, and Western PA Secretary/Treasurer since 2013, has retired from the Northern Regional Police Department after serving there for 30 years. He wasted no time in finding his next career as a Physical Security Specialist for PNC Bank. Good luck Bert!

Aaron Lauth, Session 264, retired as Chief of Police of the Mt Lebanon Police Department on Friday May 20, 2022, after serving their community since 1998. Chief Lauth enjoyed his 3-day retirement and was then appointed Chief of Police for Carnegie Mellon University Police on Monday. Aaron took over for Chief Thomas Ogden on May 23, 2022.

Chief Tom Ogden, 181st Session, retired as Chief of Police for the Carnegie Mellon University Police Department after almost 14 years. Prior to this position, Tom served as Chief of Police at the Mt Lebanon Police Department having worker there from 1980-2008. Good luck in your retirement Chief!
