Leadership Certification Program FAQs

Do you have to be a sworn law enforcement officer to take these courses?

  • No, but it is highly preferred. Non-sworn can attend only if they are in a criminal justice position that is directly related to or has a direct impact on law enforcement. As a sworn officer you can be of any rank to attend.

Do I have to be an FBINAA member to take these courses and can I become a member?

  • No, you don’t have to be an FBINAA member, but members get a discount. No, you cannot sign up to be a member; the only way to become an FBINAA member is to have graduated from the 10-week National Academy in Quantico, VA and then joined and stayed an active member of the FBINAA.

Is the FBINAA Leadership Certification Program the same as FBILEEDA’s Leadership Trilogy program?

  • No, our Leadership Certification Program is an actual Certification, with very different material. Please note: that we are a separate association from FBILEEDA, and if you are a member of FBILEEDA it does not make you a member of FBINAA.

Do you have to take the courses in a certain order?

  • No, there is no order requirement, you can take them in the order that best fits you and your department’s schedule.

Can I take just one course and not the other 2 courses?

  • Yes, you can take any number of courses without formally completing the Leadership Certification Program.

Will there be more course offerings than the ones I see on the website?

  • Yes, we are always looking to book additional courses with enough offerings to accommodate the numerous officers interested in various locations across the country. As soon as they are booked, they will go up on our website.

Is prepayment required at the time of registration or can I pay after registering for a course?

  • No, payment is not required at the time of registration- payments can be made by check or PO after registering; however, it is preferred to receive payment as soon as possible after registering.

Do all three courses and the paper need to be completed within the calendar year?

  • No, with tight budgets and time constraints, the process should be completed within two years from starting it.

What is the process to get assigned the research paper?

  • Once you complete the three courses, scan the three certificates and email them to our Director of Education and Training and you will receive your paper assignment with instructions. Email to: Tony Bailey at training@fbinaa.org.

How long is the FBINAA Leadership Certification good for? How do I recertify?

  • The certification is good for 3 years and can be renewed for another 3 years by attending any FBINAA Leadership course, the FBINAA National Conference or 16 hours of FBINAA online offerings. Once you take your course for recertification, email us at training@fbinaa.org with a copy of your course certificate, telling us that this is for your recertification, and we will send you an officially sealed Certificate of Recertification for the Leadership Certification Program, good for 3 years.

What if I have taken one or both of the older versions of Courses 1 or 2- like Meeting the Leadership Challenges or Mastering the Leadership Challenges?

  • If you have taken one or both of the older versions, they are still accepted for the Certification, and if you have taken one of the older versions, you can now select either one of the newer courses 1 or 2 (Course 1- Foundations for Leadership-Mastering Self Leadership/Developing Others For Team Success and Course 2- Cultivating a Culture of Excellence) to take as your 2nd course. The material is very different, so you can select whichever course 1 or 2, works best for your schedule.

Can my department host one of these courses? What is the process?

  • Yes you can make a request; however, there are no guarantees since we receive numerous requests to host, thus not every request can be accommodated. You cannot host the entire Leadership Certification Program, just one course at a time, since we are required to spread the courses out all over the country each year, with a limited number of class offerings. The basic requirements for hosting locations are: to be located within an hour’s drive from a major airport, be close to recommended hotels and restaurants, have a room that can seat at least 50 people with tables and chairs (the more seats the better), and to have enough screens available for everyone to see. If you meet the basic requirements, we will put you on a list of potential hosts that we will pull from when looking to place a course in your area. If you would like to host a Leadership Course, contact Education and Training at training@fbinaa.org.

Can my department contract with the FBINAA to bring the LCP directly to our agency for our officers?

  • Yes, the FBINAA can bring the 3 courses into your agency for a flat rate. These courses can be taught back-to-back to complete the entire program as quickly and cost efficiently as possible for the agency. This is a great option for departments wishing to put a large number of officers through the program in a short period of time.
